Five-Year Strategic Plan: Connecting Students to Their Future

In 2016, School District No. 73 (Kamloops/Thompson), acting on direction from the Board of Education, began a process to develop a new strategic plan to guide educational planning through the next five years.

The 2017-2022 District Strategic Plan was developed through an expanded, year-long consultation process with education partners and the community. The appointment of a Strategic Partnership Committee in September 2016 ensured all stakeholders had an opportunity to participate in the development of the vision, strategic priorities and goals that will guide the District in the delivery of educational services to the more than 14,000 students in the communities of Kamloops, Chase, Savona, Logan Lake, Barriere, Clearwater, Blue River and Sun Peaks.

District staff consulted with more than 3,000 parents, teachers and students and parents, and heard from more than 18 focus groups. The feedback received led to the development of six key priorities, each with three associated goals or objectives. 

The plan's priorities and objectives are:

Ensure each student acquires strong foundational skills and core competencies.

  • Students will demonstrate growth in thinking, communication and personal social skills
  • Students will graduate with strong literacy and numeracy skills
  • Students will demonstrate proficiency in education, career and life planning

Connect students to their interest and passions.

  • Students will experience personalized learning that helps them discover her interests and passions
  • Students will be able to reflect on their learning and set goals for improvement
  • Students will apply their learning to address problems relevant to the lives and communities

 Honour the First People’s principles of learning and Aboriginal worldviews and perspectives.

  • Students will experience learning through Aboriginal ways of knowing and doing
  • Students will appreciate the historical and contemporary contributions of Aboriginal people and the local Secwepemc nation
  • Students will appreciate how cultural identity shapes worldview

 Foster an inclusive, adaptable and accountable district culture.

  • Staff will demonstrate their commitment to inclusive practices
  • Staff will demonstrate their adaptability to meet the changing needs and norms of the district
  • Staff will be individually and collectively responsible for meeting standards and positively contributing to the district

 Strengthen partnerships to enrich the way we lead, learn, and work.

  • Staff will practice effective collaboration at all levels at the district
  • Staff will build effective teams and networks to facilitate partnerships and support students
  • Staff will engage community-based and job-embedded professional learning and training

Ensure the sustainable uses of our resources.

  • Staff will align district priorities with sustainable budget planning
  • Staff will promote and incorporate sustainable environmental practices in all facilities
  • Staff will address facility and infrastructure needs as a result of changing demographics
