Joan Cowden


Joan is serving her third term as a Trustee on the Board of Education. She is the Chair of the Education Committee, the Board Representative on the District Safety Committee and the District Representative to the City of Kamloops Mayor’s Advisory Council for Person With Disabilities. Joan also is a member of Literacy in Kamloops(LinK), Kamloops Tangalle Friendship Committee and the District United Way Campaign Committee.

Joan retired in 2008 after spending 36 years as an elementary teacher in the Kamloops/Thompson School District. As a teacher, she was very involved in many extra curricular activities. Joan coached cross country running, volleyball and track and field and was an elementary sports coordinator at the school and district level for many years. She was also very involved in Fine Arts Programs, the McQueen Lake Environmental Centre and was a member of many district committees. Joan continues to volunteer as a teacher monitor for the secondary school program “Encounters With Canada.”

Joan and her husband Bob, a retired secondary school administrator, have lived in Kamloops for over 42 years. Their son Brett, and his wife Jilene live in Saskatoon, SK.
